Laura asks…

Are there any Army weight loss programs?

I am going to join the Army, but I am about 40 pounds over the weight limit. I’m 6’6” and 280 or so. Are there any Army weight loss programs to help people interested in joining lose the weight they need to? I can’t seem to motivate myself to work out by myself, and I think an army program would help me greatly. Thanks in advanced!

weight loss cardiff answers:

When you sign your contract the MEPS station should have given you a little booklet that has all the army exercises in it. There is a schedule in the back that you can choose how long you want your training to be (I think the longest training schedule is 13 weeks?). Go by that and you should be golden! Nothing better than already knowing the exercises when you get to basic, too!!

Paul asks…

Are there any weight loss programs like weight watchers for a 13 year old?

hi. are there any weight loss programs like weight watchers for a 13 year old? thanks.

weight loss cardiff answers:

I really don’t think there are any for 13 year olds. I could be wrong though. You can ask your mother to buy more reduced fat foods and try being more active. Even riding a bike more often may help. Theres an article on Lucille Roberts blog called “Ten Changes You Can Make to Your Diet to Start Losing Weight” that may help you. It discusses how simple things like drinking more water and not putting dressing on your salad can also help you loose weight.

weight loss cardiff answers:

You can lose the unwanted 50 lbs. Or so, it’s just a matter of finding the right combination of diet and exercise that you can live with every day and stay motivated.

There are many good weight loss programs out there. You just need to find the one that fits in with your lifestyle and motivation. Some are designed for rapid weight loss and others employ a slower long term approach. You can find a lot of help on the web these days, information and support forums. I listed some popular sources that might help you.

Donna asks…

I want to start dance. I’m 41. Am I out of luck?

I’m in love with choreography. When I was little I loved movie musicals. Now I want to learn dance.

Here are the problems with that:

I’m 41. For somebody just starting out dance, that’s pretty late in the game. I keep saying to myself, “Gwen Verdon” danced the lead in”Sweet Charity” at 41, but she danced all her life to get there! 🙁

I’m not as thin as I’d like to be. I can lose weight quickly, and my muscles spring out hard very easily when I exercise regularly, but right this second, I’m built “sturdy” – not slinky. 🙁

I have very heavy, sturdy, super strong bones – they don’t break, no matter what I do. That’s good for dance injuries, but that kind of bone density makes you physically heavy because these bones are heavier than more fragile ones. I’ll have to work so much harder to get lift when I do jumps. That’s intimidating.

Last, I have a damaged tendon in my left ankle and foot, and when I exert it, it becomes inflamed and hurts like the dickens. I can fight through the pain and I think dance is worth it. Besides, I’m sure dancers all face painful feet and ankles. That’s the biz I guess. So there are the obstacles.

The good points: I live in New York. Lots of dance schools here. But I don’t know where to start, there are so many! I could find and hang out with real dancers and dance students here. But I’m so lost, and I am also very scared. What should I do to start dance at 41? Am I a dreamer? Is there any hope for a 41 year old late bloomer?

Thanks for all answers, Yahoo dance community. Really. This is my dream.

weight loss cardiff answers:

Out of luck, absolutely not!

In terms of the body, don’t worry about getting thin. Body type has nothing to do with talent, it’s just a stereotype that gets you hired as a classical ballet dancer. I’ve seen 180 lb women with amazing talent, and I’ve seen 90 lb women that look like a grasshopper on stage. Also, that ‘slinky’ body is genetic, you can’t work out to get it. If you’re ‘sturdy boned’ then you always will be. At your age and at your ability you don’t want to have the bones of a little bird, nor do you want that facility. You want your body to be a sturdy and solid instrument on which you can rely. Overly flexible usually means weak, and weak means dangerous. You want a balance of strength and flexibility, as one is useless without the other.

To get in shape for dance I strongly recommend you sign up for yoga and pilates classes, especially in the ‘off season’. They’ll give you the long and lean muscles that dancers seek and use, and they’ll greatly improve your balance and flexibility (plus they’re nice and relaxing!). Running and lifting weights are useless for dancers. If you want good cardio, take up swimming. No impact on the joints and it burns huge calories. Skipping rope (professional boxer style, not double dutch) is a good way to get cardio, too, just make sure you’re in good shoes and using your knees properly.

The tendon may be fixable. If you haven’t been to physiotherapy then you need to go, even if it’s only for one or two sessions. They’ll teach you valuable at-home exercises. For the inflammation, remember RICE. Rest, ice, compression, elevation. Alternate between hot and cold compresses to reduce the swelling. Ibuprofen may help (Tylenol is NOT an anti-inflammatory). A proper support may be what you need. Get fit for a brace if your doctor deems it necessary. You’ll thank yourself when you’re 80. You may want to ask about special insoles for daily wear. It really depends on your injury.

Dance SHOULDN’T hurt if you’re doing it properly, so don’t convince yourself that beauty is pain and all that. If something hurts then that is your body’s way of saying SLOW DOWN, YOU’RE DOING IT WRONG! Listen to your body talking. Some things will be uncomfortable, and you may be sore after classes, but you should never be in agony. If you take care of your body it will return the favor.

You’re certainly not too old to physically partake in dance. Some professionals dance until 40 (and are asked to retire for being ‘old’), and continue teaching well after that. My mother is far too old for the stage, but at 56 she still has the grace she had at 22 (and the skinny legs, which I envy). As long as you are physically in shape, age truly is ‘just a number’. Even my 80 year old grandmother still has that dancer poise (underneath the Parkinsons, mind you). You can spot dancers from a mile away, even when they’re ”old”.

I’ve had an 80 year old woman in one of my beginner classes, and she was awesome! I’ve also seen a man close to 90 move in ways I could only imagine (he’d studied yoga his entire life). Your mind creates these limitations, and with concentration you can free yourself from them. Set realistic goals, but don’t let the idea of ‘being over 40’ stop you from dancing to your very best potential. Baby steps, and stop when it hurts.

For now, sign up for yoga and pilates. Then, look for dance studios in your area (Mintchip had great suggestions). Sign up for beginner level adult classes once or twice a week. Go from there 🙂

Best of luck, I hope you discover a new passion.

(Also, you’ll probably learn basic technique for the first few years, don’t expect to see many jumps).

Mary asks…

How do I know which are the best weight loss programs?

I’m trying to choose a weight loss program but there are so many I don’t know which works and which don’t.

weight loss cardiff answers:

Choosing the right weight loss program can mean the difference between just wasting your money and actually losing weight.

There are so many programs out there from Jenny Craig to the Atkins diet and even the Chuck Norris total gym.

There are a few things you want to look for.

1.Do they have a diet plan that helps you create meals.
2.Do they have an effective exercise program.
3.Do they teach you how to keep the weight off.

Finding one that is legitimate is also tough. Here’s a link to an ehow article that talks about choosing the best weight loss programs and a couple of others that talk about weight loss.

Laura asks…

Does anyone know of any good weight loss programs, diets or pills?

Im a mom of 2 and i know i am about 100lbs overweight. I have no reason to be this big. I have excersice videos but I loose like 2 to 3lbs and then i gain it right back. So i was wondering if anyone knew of any good weight loss programs, diets or pills? I saw the ad for the HCG drop and I was also wondering if anyone knew if the drops were good. I also want the weight gone by the fall I plan to have a wedding then. Thanks and serious answers only.

weight loss cardiff answers:

Are you using the drops?
A 500 calorie per day diet is considered anorexic. Mix it with a hormone from pregnant women’s urine and you get a miracle diet!
All over the counter hcg products were announced as illegal and fraudulent by the FDA on January 24, 2011. Testing concluded that all over the counter oral and injection products on the market have little to no real hcg in them but most a similar synthetic hormone. I was in GNC last week. They carry three brands of hcg drops and not one of them has any hcg in them. The well trained salesman even admitted it when I mentioned it. They contained “similar hormones” or amino acids.
Anyone that lost weight especially with the drops did it because they ate fewer calories than they burned. The hcg acted as the placebo to help them lose the weight.
The only approved use for hcg is to increase fertility in both men and women.
Next year will mark 60 years since this fraudulent science was started.
The doctors exploiting this benign hormone with the ability to prescribe injections can’t even agree on how it works. Some say it releases stored fat calories into the system. Others say it acts as an appetite suppressant.
Neither explanation justifies the weight loss in the individuals taking the oral drops with NO hcg in them that still lost weight. I am confident the hcg diet has a 95% failure rate just like every other controversial diet plan out there.
By the way, the expensive “clinical injections” are not covered by insurance since it is not FDA approved. What doctor wouldn’t want to get an “all cash” practice going?
Check out these clips before going further. Just aired a few months ago.

So the question is are you willing to risk your health with an extreme diet treatment based on testimonial evidence as opposed to clinical research evidence, and the statements from doctors in this all cash business?

Your Question About Easy Weight Loss

Laura asks…

Quick easy weight loss?

I have a pretty skinny body that I am happy with for the most part. Starting monday, i am spending a week at cheer camp surrounded by tiny little cheerleaders. I have about 5 pounds of extra fat on my tummy that i have been trying to get rid of. Basically, I have just been doing a bunch of crunches and using everything I can to et me fit (ei. wii fit, just dance, lifting weights, elliptical…) And I am drinking water non-stop all day. And I eat healthy balanced meals, making sure I watch my portions. I am doing everything right that I can, I just want to lose the little tummy weight fast. Any suggestions on workouts or foods that really help with that?? Thanks(:
I also have been having trouble sleeping. I get into bed at 10, and fall asleep at around 1…. any help for that?

weight loss cardiff answers:

Maybe you NEED your little tummy. Have you ever thought about that?

Get rid of words like “quick”, “easy” and “fast” from your weight loss vocabulary. Losing body fat is slow, hard and takes a lot of months.
Hopefully you’re not thinking that you can lose the most stubborn last 5 pounds tummy fat…over the week-end?
Some try for months and years until they finally give up (because they NEED their little tummy, they just don’t know that but their body does).

The way your body stores fat is genetic and also according to gender…age…stress level. Teenagers and menopause people get more belly fat because of hormonal issues (adipose tissue is an important endocrine system). Stressed people get more belly fat too (according to some studies). In general, when you’re thin, the body likes to start storing the fat reserves next to the digestive system, for practical reason, so you get belly fat first. People who are overweight or obese and then lose weight get frustrated when they cannot get rid of their belly fat (first one in, last one out system so they’d need to get really skinny to lose it). Men tend to get the unhealthy visceral fat (around internal organs that smother them) while women tend to get the subcutaneous fat (under the skin) not only in the belly, but the thighs, buttocks, breasts…Adipose tissue (body fat), not only provides hormones and is a fat reserve for energy need and to feed the brain, but also provides insulation for the body (against cold or hot temperatures) and cushioning for the digestive and reproductive system. You have your rib cage to protect your heart, lungs and liver but you have no ribs to protect your intestines and reproductive system…so you get cushioning from fat reserves and your body does not care if you live in a time and place where belly fat goes against beauty criteria. And of course, in a car accident, broken ribs can pierce the lungs and kill you, that is not much of a protection there, but the human body was never meant to drive a car and crash (use a seatbelt).

Make sure you follow proper form for your “bunch of crunches” so as not to get protruding muscles but flat ones.
Women do not get “big abs” when doing crunches, which are pretty small muscles. But you can get protruding ones with bad form (or just bad posture all day long).

The proper form when doing regular crunches (while using an ab exercise bar…see link) is doing those on the floor. You keep your knees comfortably bent and your feet on the floor. You gently press your lower back flat onto the floor the whole time…this is very important for good form, you have to tilt your pelvis up to achieve that (when your pelvis goes up, you lower back goes down). Then you have to keep your belly in, like pull your belly button towards your spine and contract your abdominal muscles. Then you have to curl up but not too high…the proper movement is to get high enough to lift the shoulder blades off the floor and then get back down until the shoulder blades barely touch the floor (do not completely lie down) and then you go back up again.

A good tempo for regular crunches is 3 seconds up, 3 seconds down (real seconds, not just counting).

Now…you also need reverse crunches for the lower part of the abs. Again, keep your lower back pressed flat onto the floor the whole time (and keep your belly in) but now your lower body is moving instead of your upper body. You keep your legs at a 90 degree angle (lower leg bent at a 90 degree angle with the thigh…right angle at the knee at all time) so your feet are not on the floor but up, with your thighs perpendicular to the floor. Then bring your knees to your chest and then back to the starting position (so the thighs are perpendicular to the floor again). The whole time, hold your head slightly with your hands (you don’t need the ab bar for that one as you’re not moving your upper body, just maintaining your head and shoulder blades off the floor.

A good tempo for regular crunches is 2 seconds up, 2 seconds down (real seconds, not just counting).

For your other question in your additional details about your trouble sleeping (trying to get two questions for the price of one? Haha), I’ll need to use my secondary account as I’m running out of space here (under 5,000 characters).

William asks…

what are easy weight loss programs for teens?

what are workout programs for teens that show results fastt?

weight loss cardiff answers:

I get seventeen and in every issue (you get them once a month) they have a little thing that you can tear out. It helps you pick healthier foods, it has about 6-8 different exercises you can do at home. It’s helped me a lot because none of the exercises take very long, and they helped me get toned! (:

Nancy asks…

What’s the best way to find a weight loss/workout buddy?

I have tried using friends, but they all seem to be slackers. They’re unreliable and don’t believe in altering their diet to get healthier. I’m kinda shy and have thought about finding an “online buddy” but fear that it would be too easy to just fib because there’s no face to face contact. Any helpful suggestions would be appreciated.

weight loss cardiff answers:

There is a webite called weightlossbuddy.com, which can hook you up with people in your areas and which similar goals
