Mark asks…

How much math and chem is involved in a registered dietitian’s career?

I am looking into becoming a registered dietitian, but I am kind of weak in math and chem. Exactly how much is involved in the everyday job? I have a passion for health and nutrition, and really like the thought of healing people through diet. I think it would be an amazing career. I am just a little scared of the math and chem part. Could someone offer some insight if you are an RD? Thanks so much 🙂

weight loss cardiff answers:

Dietitians only need basic arithmetic skills such as adding up, multiplying. Also, get comfortable with percentages. That’s about it.

As for chemistry, there is none involved.

Your Question About Easy Weight Loss

Thomas asks…

How much weight will i lose per week if i do this?

ok so lets say (hypatheticly) i eat 200 calories a day. and i know 3500 calories are in a pound. and if i do that for a week, how much weight would i lose at the end of the week? im not good at math lol but i wanna know how many calories i should eat to be able to achieve my weight goal
btw please dont tell me how eating 200 calories isnt good- i just made up a low number im not actually eating that much

weight loss cardiff answers:

If you managed to survive the whole week you might actually weigh MORE. Eating so little your metabolism screeches to a complete halt and your body goes into starvation or survival mode to conserve every bit of fuel you put into it. You will not be burning any fat whatsoever. Your body will be feeding off of your muscles and internal organs (including your heart) just for the energy to stay alive!

If you are trying to lose weight you should be exercising for a MINIMUM of 60 minutes every day, and eating at least every 2-3 hours. Eating at least 5 or 6 small meals or healthy snacks every day will speed up your metabolism, combined with the exercise, you will drop weight off in no time. You should never go under 1200 calories per day for any reason. Also, the more active you are, the more calories you need in your diet to give you the energy to get through your day without damaging your body.

Charles asks…

Is it ok to eat only 1000 calories a day and work out 5 x per week to lose weight?

I am a 31 year old female, 5’1, 138 pounds.. trying to lose 30 pounds in 90 days.
I am working out 5-6 times a day for 30 minutes (I burn about 230 calories per 30 minutes)… Why does everyone say to eat 1200? I think 1000 will get me to my goal faster.

weight loss cardiff answers:

If you don’t give your body enough fuel to support the work you are doing, your metabolism will actually slow down and go into starvation mode, causing you to gain weight or lose it much more slowly. Feed your body and it will thank you!

Lizzie asks…

What is a safe amount of weight to lose per week?

My heaviest weight was 105 kgs about 2 years ago.

In the last 13 weeks I have lost 10.9kgs. Is this safe? I’ve been eating right and exercising. I’m now at 86.1kgs.

weight loss cardiff answers:

I don’t know metrics, but it depends on what shape you’re in when you start. If you have a lot of weight to lose, it is semi normal to lose a lot right off. If you have less weight to lose, 2 or 3 pounds per week is normal if you’re just eating healthy and exercising.

Your Question About Easy Weight Loss

David asks…

I need to lose weight but am unable to exercise?

I know it’s a lot to read but I really need some help.

Hi,

I am 15 years old and overweight and need to lose weight. Maybe around 40-60 pounds. I really just want to be a size between 6 and 10, nothing smaller really. Now I am a size 12 or 14 or 16, depending on the company that makes the clothes. I am bigger at the bottom and wear a shirt size of 12.
-I can’t exercise because I have asthma AND low blood pressure. When I do exercise, I get light-headed quickly and sometimes I even feel like I am about to faint. The walls start closing in on me and everything gets bright. I become very dizzy and nauseous at that point. But that’s only sometimes, like when I do something like running. (Running shouldn’t be that difficult for someone my age) It’s really embarrassing and I feel so awful like I can’t even do something like running. But I know it’s because I have low blood pressure. I have mild asthma and it isn’t triggered easily but when something like bad air (like thick smoke or aerosol spray) gets into my lungs it’s hard to breathe. But I am not sure how asthma would affect my exercising.
-I have an okay diet, but I usually eat very little or not at all. When I do eat it’s my mom’s home cooking. It’s usually rice with meat, and lots of vegetables and beans.
-I know it’s not much but I will ride my bike to and from school every day, a total of 5 miles a day. The only days I won’t ride would be when it rains or snows, or when it is frigid cold or boiling hot.
-During the school year I won’t have much free time because of loads of homework and chores.
-I don’t want to have to take any medication to lose weight. I don’t really aim to build muscle mass either, just to get to a smaller size is my goal.
-I am exactly 5 feet tall if that helps.
-I feel awful and I actually hate my silhouette sometimes. What I really want is to be a size between 6 and 10. I can be patient, I don’t need to lose a lot of weight in a crazy-short time, but the sooner the better.

I am sorry, I know it was a lot to read, I just really wanted you to understand my predicament.

weight loss cardiff answers:

I would consider consulting a doctor or a licensed physical trainer. There are exercises that you can do. I would cut out the rice or switch to wild rice. Make sure you are drinking a lot of water. Also, consider having your thyroid levels checked!! If you are riding your bike five miles a day and have healthy diet, then you should be at a healthy weight. Also, the feeling dizzy and nauseous can be that you are just not used to running. I felt like that when I first started running. Maybe try walking for five minutes, running for 1. And then increasing the intervals. Or, just run for 30 seconds. Whatever works for you.

In the meantime, try to learn to love yourself. I am sure that you are a beautiful girl.

Richard asks…

How to lose weight? Details..?

How to lose weight? Details..?
okay.

I’m 13, I’m a girl. I need to lose weight.

details: But it’s really hard for me. My parents are overweight, and so is my sister. but I have it worst of all.

I’m out of breath even if I just run like 5 houses down in my neighborhood. I’m not active at all. Never have been. It’s very hard for me. Even when I push myself, I’m a very slow runner, biker, walker, skater, etc. I’m always behind everyone. I’m not flexible at all. I can’t do a split, cartwheel, or anything. Never have been able to.

Also, I get hungry very easily. I almost never ever go more than 4 hours without at least snacking. I’ve never gone a day without eating. Changing my diet couldn’t do much, I’m already drinking fat free milk, diet soda, eating low fat ice cream, etc. I NEVER EVER drink regular milk. But I see no result. I have been for years.

Do you have any ideas? It’s really hard, so I want to go slow and not try too hard. It’s really embarrassing, but I weigh over 200 lbs. I’m 5’5, and 13.

I really need to start doing something about it. It ruins my life.

Any good tips or anything? and you’ll only get a thumbs down if you’re negative. I get negative comments and looks everyday from tons of people.

weight loss cardiff answers:

Eat every 4 hours. Never in between!
For breakfast 8am diner 12pm and lauch 8pm, have a complete meal 1 dairy product, 1 cereal product (potato, bread, beans), 1 fruit or vegetable, 1 meat product

After school 4 pm have a healthy snack ex a slice of bread with 4 chocolate squares and a glass of milk or fruit juice.

Eat slowly and masticate very long (this will give you the impression that you are full eating less.)

Forget about the low fat stuff. Why ? Heres an example: If you drink a glass of low fat milk you will still be hungry afterwards and perhaps end up eating a snack. Regular milk will keep you full till the next meal.

You are alowed one regular glass of soda per meal. Then drink water.
You can have ice cream but limit yourself to one spoon. You can have desert but only one per meal and it should be bigger than the palm of your hand.

If you don’t feel hungry don’t eat if your full stop eating.

Its as simple as that… 🙂 Good luck girl

^_^
My form of exercise now is:
Ballroom dance 2 hours a day twice a week; Wednesday and Thursday.

weight loss cardiff answers:

Well, my advice would be to go to your library and get a free copy of one of the major diet books (not one of the fad “get slim quick” books, but the ones that show you how to properly count calories, teach you about nutrition content of food, and give you an overall approach to good health. I have found that the “fat flush diet” book tends to be the book my mom, a physician, recommends to her patients).

Once you have an idea on how to properly diet, you are going to need to add in exercise. With exercise you need to be careful to avoid “burnout” (a condition caused by overloading your body in too short a period of time). Pick something you enjoy doing, whether it be walking, bicycling, swimming, hiking, etc… (I find music makes everything better, so try to get an ipod if you dont have one already) and the recommended amount of exercise is 30minutes of brisk exercise 3-4x per week. This is a solid starting place, and will keep you from exercising too hard and injuring yourself. As your body becomes more fit, you will be able to gradually add more time and intensity to your workouts.

Once you are satisfied with your weight, I would recommend picking up Pilates as a way to tone your muscles and get you in tip top shape (not ideal right now for you though, stick with the cardio).

I am looking for weight loss success storys that are motivating and inspiring. I am trying to lose fifteen pounds and I want to stay on track.
Please report back. Any shape, size, and weight … I would just like to hear them. Thank you!
Btw, I did not ask for ways to lose weight. I simply asked for weight loss success storys. That’s all I want. Thanks. All others will get thumbs down for not following the rules.

weight loss cardiff answers:

I lost 43 lbs. On Weight Watchers about three years ago. My success was mostly attributed to Weight Watchers being a very easy to follow plan, one that you can live with forever.

Also, it helped me to always remember that time will pass regardless if I don’t try, so I might as well try and make use of the time I’ve been given. The days and weeks pass so fast, before you know it, six months are gone and you wonder why you didn’t do anything with that time.

Daniel asks…
