Joseph asks…

Why do insane people say that they are Jesus or some other deity?

I’ve noticed that many insane people that I have studied (school) say that they are Jesus. Why do they claim they are a deity? I realize they are insane but I just wonder why so many insane people say they are deities.

Grandiose delusions. They are a very common type of delusion, and what’s more grandiose than saying you’re a deity?

Mandy asks…

How does the Jewish God differ from the deities found in Mesopotamian and Egyptian societies?

Does Isaiah claim that the Jewish God rules over all the other gods? If so, then is Isaiah really a monotheist? If not, then how does Isaiah present the Jewish God as the only deity?

weight loss cardiff answers:

Answer: whether other deities exist is up for debate.

What makes the G-d of Abraham different is that the worship of Him is of Him and Him alone (leave the trinity debate for another time).

Other religions of that time were polytheistic – the worship of many gods. The worship of one god, whether He be the only god in existence or just one of many, makes the religion monotheistic.

Lisa asks…

To the Hindus: What is the difference between God and a deity?

How can one be both God and a deity when God has said that He is omnipresent, omnipotent, and omniscient? Is there a possibility that God is all of those things, and the deities are merely humans having been instructed to bring forth a message or revelation to mankind? Please share your thoughts with me!

weight loss cardiff answers:

That is one view. Another view is this: Hindus do not worship many gods and goddesses, but rather they see all as manifestations of Brahman.

Brahman is formless in its unworshipped state, however it is the love of the devotee that freezes this formless Brahman into the object of his/her devotion like flowing water being frozen to ice.

This is human limitation; we cannot perceive the infinite without colouring it with our limited minds.

Hindus also say that if God is infinitely powerful then surely God also has a button (has the power) to allow God to become finite? If you say God cannot become finite then God is missing a button – not infinitely powerful!
