Linda asks…

Any tips on getting and staying motivated to reach my weight loss goals?

Last summer I started a weight loss program and was really excited about the prospect of being fit and healthy while I’m still young. Within the first 2 months, I lost almost 20lbs and wasn’t craving chocolate and sweets and other things like that, which I normally crave all the time. Then I went to Chicago for the weekend, and it’s been all downhill from there. I completely lost all my motivation and I think my cravings are even worse now than they were before I started the program last year! I just turned 25 and want to get healthy and fit so that I can better enjoy my life. I’m open to any advice or words of wisdom that might help me get back on track. Thanks in advance!
Ok, I’m not looking for people to tell me what to do to lose weight, because I already know that part. I’m asking about how to MOTIVATE myself to keep it up.

weight loss cardiff answers:

Congrats on working towards a fitter and healthier lifestyle. I don’t have any fancy plans but when I lost some weight and started an exercise program a few years ago I found that sticking to a strict program all the time was very hard. I kept a record of what exercise I did on a calendar (for me it was treadmill so I recorded time and kilometres) It was amazing to watch my improvement and it kept me motivated. With food I aimed for 5 days a week that I ate well – lots of veges etc and no treats. But I let myself have 2 days where I might eat out or splurge. I recorded this and the days might change depending on if I went out mid week or weekend. I found this worked as I could have treats but could also tell from my records how often I was having them. Good luck hope this helps.

Carol asks…

Is it better to do the workout programs on treadmills or just run?

You know how treadmills have “weight loss programs” or “aerobic programs“? Will you lose more weight faster by doing one of those or just simply running on a treadmill?

weight loss cardiff answers:

OK, ignore the spammer above me. Those gimmicks never work and prey on peoples desire to lose weight easily, if they do work, it will be short term and the weight will come back as soon as you stop.

Either will work, the programs might push you a little harder than you’ll push yourself though. Just make sure to spend no less than 30 minutes on the treadmill, at a speed that will keep your heart rate up steadily. Spend no more than 1 hour on a treadmill either. This includes a 5 minute warm up and a 5 minute cool down. You need to make sure to do this when you run too. For weight loss you also need to watch your diet as well. That means eating enough just as it means not eating too much. If you don’t get enough calories your body will burn muscle instead of fat.

EDIT: Shaun is ok, the first answerer is the spammer, in case no one noticed.

Maria asks…

Thoughts on Science Diet dog food?

My dachshund puppy turns 1 in early March, and I’m researching different foods to switch him to. I’m looking at Nutro, Science Diet, and Canidae.

If anyone — particularly vets or breeders — have any input on these foods, it would be greatly appreciated.

weight loss cardiff answers:

Science Diet is better than most grocery store foods, but it’s definitely the lowest quality of those three. The other two are included in the “Best 20 Dog Foods of 2006” list done by Whole Dog Journal.

The two most important things about a dog food is that the first ingredient is a meat proten and that it does not contain corn. Dogs shouldn’t be fed strictly carnivorous diets now that we’ve domesticated them, but they do need more protein than carbohydrates, vegetables etc… Dogs can’t digest corn very well(although most of them love the taste), so corn products should not be in their food.

I agree with the poster who said that Canidae is probably the highest quality food of those three. My dogs eat Nutro Natual Lamb Meal & Rice because one is picky and will only eat Lamb & Rice. I can’t buy Canidae in the store near me, and to ship it would be twice as expensive as it is. My vet is happy with Nutro, it does come highly recommended, and even the breeders I’ve spoken with don’t think the added expense would be worth it. (If I could buy it in the store, I would, though.)

Ken asks…

Cambridge diet – what food can I eat?

i am on the Cambridge diet for 1 week now, and i am allowed to eat one meal per day, however i am not sure what food i am allowed to eat. I know i can eat white fish and white meat but does anybody know what else i am allowed to eat?

weight loss cardiff answers:

About the Cambridge Diet
According to the six-step program outlined on the Cambridge Diet website, you follow a low-calorie regime for the first two steps by eating 400 to 1,000 calories for a minimum of 4 weeks. During the first step, the dieter consumes plenty of water and three Cambridge Diet meals consisting of smoothies and meal bars. The second step is the same as the prior, but you can eat vegetables and protein-rich foods like chicken breasts.

For the third step, you eat 1,000 calories in the form of two Cambridge Diet meals as well as foods recommended by a nutritionist (such as whole-wheat pasta, salad, fruits and eggs). The fourth step has a 1,200-calorie intake with a wider range of food options plus Cambridge Diet meals. The fifth step is 1,500 calories with a wider variety of food choices as outlined by the Cambridge Diet counselor. The last step focuses on sustaining the weight loss by making proper food choices. While on the diet, you purchase and eat a series of supplements in the form of bars, smoothie mixes and shakes.
Considerations of Nutrition
If the program is followed, you can receive all vitamins and minerals despite the low calorie intake. The supplements contain all of the necessary nutrients but come at a high price tag and, some would argue, in an unappetizing form. Though the last four steps provide a wider array of food, you must be willing to commit to a diet of little variety for the first two steps, or the first 4 weeks, of the plan. The diet is also very low in calories and should not be seen as a lifestyle.

The program’s last step of “maintenance” is just as important as the first five. While the first five are low-calorie, the last step, which has no calorie restrictions, tries to instill good dietary habits that can be carried over after the diet ends. While the diet provides an outline of what is acceptable to eat, once the diet is over, you must be prepared to make better food choices to keep the weight off.

Sandra asks…

For a raw foods diet…?

Is it acceptable to eat cottage cheese on a raw foods diet?
How about canned tuna in water?
Maybe I should clarify –
I eat meat on a regular basis.
I’m eating raw foods for a week to cleanse a bit.
I know how to lose weight, but that’s not what I’m going for – I don’t need to lose weight.
Thanks for the one answer on the tuna – now does anyone know about the cottage cheese?

weight loss cardiff answers:

If you want to eat a raw food diet – it consists of fruits, veggies, nuts and seeds all living or raw, nothing cooked, canned or processed. Cottage cheese is dairy and tuna is meat so both would not be a part of a normal raw diet. But you can tailor make your raw diet any way you want. The colon gets a good rest and it would help a lot with the colon cleanse and also cleanse the liver and other organs if you did NOT eat the cottage cheese or tuna because digestion will take longer etc. Etc. Stick to fresh living raw foods as much as possible and you’ll feel a lot of energy too on a raw food diet. Nurse Sue (and I’m also a 10 year raw foodist having cured my breast cancer ten years ago with raw foods.)

Your Question About Easy Weight Loss

Betty asks…

Will this diet work for losing weight in 6 weeks?

If I ate this everyday for 6 weeks how much weight would I lose..?

Breakfast..
Wholemeal toast (85 calories) with one slice of honey roasted ham (32 calories)

Lunch…
1 home-made banana smoothie made with just over 200ml milk (just over 92 calories) and an average sized banana (not sure how many calories)

Dinner…
1 slice of bread (85 calories), with a tin of tomato soup (240 calories).

Throughout the day as a snack and included in my lunch and dinner I will eat a small bowl of green vegetables, including green beans, peas, and broccoli. (Not sure how many calories, sorry, but it can’t be that much, right?)

Exercise will be…
One 30-45 minute walk in the morning (should I do this before or after breakfast?)
Aerobics throughout the day, resulting in about 1.5 hours throughout the day.

Will this help me lose weight in 6 weeks before I go back to school?

weight loss cardiff answers:

You are too specific. You will get really bored of eating this stuff for 6 weeks, and would require an awful lot of discipline. You would have to vary it, such as switching soups, sandwich filler etc. I would walk after breakfast, where your body has energy reserves to burn, rather than tripping it into conserve mode. Increase the general exercise slowly. You will most certainly lose weight, but how much is unknown.

Sandra asks…

Plan to lose weight in two weeks?

So I know this is not a great idea and you should take it slow and steady, but I gained weight and need to lose some to fit into something that I already bought. How many calories should I eat and how long should I walk a day to lose 5-10 pounds in two weeks. I know 10 is probably not realistic (and yes I know not healthy) but even 5 would be good. Some information, I am rather overweight, I am 24 and I already bike about 5 miles a day so need to add onto that. Please leave rude comments out, serious answers only, thank you.

weight loss cardiff answers:

You can safely lose 2 to 3 pounds a week so you should be okay. Just exercise for at least 30 minutes a day. This means 5 minute warm up, 5 minute cool down, and 20 minutes of getting your heart rate up. You don’t need to run. Just walk fast, light aerobics, or something like that. Your heart rate does not have to be pumping like crazy. You will lose weight better if it’s not actually. But it does have to be heightened a bit. Eat many tiny meals throughout the day. Lots of vegetables and fruits. If you starve your body will hold onto the weight or even cause you to gain weight. Food gets your metabalism going so eat well, just chose the right things.

If you’re rather overweight as you said, you might lose weight even faster. The heavier you are the faster and easier it is to lose weight.

WARNING: If you are not used to exercise you don’t want to over do it. Your body should get used to exercise. Try exercising one day then taking a break the next.

Donald asks…

Lose weight in 1 week?

I’m 14 and I’m meeting a guy in 1 week. Id like to Lose some weight any ideas?

weight loss cardiff answers:

When you are losing weight, you should exercise and diet together.
If you exercise without dieting, you will get bigger appetite, which
will lead to increase of weight, or muscle grow
underneath the fat layer, and make you bulkier. If you diet without
exercising, you will become flabby and will have excess skin. For
diet, go wheat free. No pasta, pizza, bread and so on. And no food
after 7 p.m. People achieve marvellous results with it. Depending on
your initial weight, you can drop upwards from 20 pounds a month. If
you don’t eat wheat then you don’t eat all those sticky, fatty goey
cakes, you don’t eat junk food, and you don’t eat biscuits. But your
diet is still balanced. It costs nothing, and you do not have to
calculate points or to buy special meals or plans. For exercising,
start with walking, and then switch to running/jogging. Running is the
most efficient and calorie-burn exercise ever. If you are overweight a
lot, walk first or you may have health complications (heart attack,
disjointed bones and so on). Weight lifting is a good means to target
your problem areas for men and women. It’s not necessarily to become a
bodybuilder or even join a gym – a couple of dumbbells will help you
to target your problem areas (stomach, butt, legs, arms, chest).

Your Question About Easy Weight Loss

Betty asks…

What is a good online weight loss program that will help me lose weight fast?

I am 13 and 155 pounds. I need to know a good online weight loss program that will help me lose thirty pounds before September. If you have any more questions just email me at fifa_samer96@yahoo.com

weight loss cardiff answers:

I have been through it all and know what’s it about. The main thing is to stick in there. You can’t be an addict to food and never exercise if you want to live a healthy life and keep the weight off. I’ve worked out, done every diet, and all types of classes.

Nothing works, besides dedication and intelligence towards the subject of losing weight.

First, depending on how much weight you need to lose, your diet is the first concern. You can’t eat 10,000 calories a day and expect the weight to come off, even if you are exercising a lot. Which brings us to the next thing. Duh, Exercising…

This is a must especially if you need to a lot of weight. Get at least 30 mins of some good hardcore exercising. Do some cardio, in the long run, it’s good for the heart.

However, I find the most hardest part of losing weight/keeping it off, in my diet. It’s so hard to keep your fingers out of the cookie jar or those chocolate goodies. I’ve found a great addition to help any one out, it’s a natural weight loss supplement called Proactol. Now don’t get all crazy on me and say diet pills don’t work. That is true, but not in this case. This one isn’t meant to burn pounds while you sit on the couch. It’s an appetite suppressant, along with being a fat binder. I saved money on the pills at theweightlossplace dot com along with getting some good info. It basically makes those fingers not go towards the cookie jar. For me it’s the best pill I’ve tried and I’ve tried cupboards full. Now this doesn’t mean you have to follow my foot steps but I’ve successfully lost roughly 70 pounds and keeping it off til this day.

Well good luck and remember what I said, Dedicate.

Individuals involved in weight loss programs often feel fatigued, irritable, and experience headaches.

Your body becomes accustomed to your average daily caloric intake. When you begin decreasing caloric intake, additional stress is placed on your body as it attempts to adapt and become more efficient by increasing your metabolic rate. The result? Fatigue, irritability, and often times – headaches.

During this time it is more essential than ever to provide your body plentiful amounts of pure nutrients required for energy and vitality. Adequate hydration is also essential. Many energy drinks on the market contain high levels of caffeine and other known diuretics, which dehydrate your body. This places strain on your heart while additionally reducing your bodies ability to rid itself of toxins and other harmful chemicals…
