How often do I need to exercise to lose weight?

I am 20 pounds overweight from what the average person my height and weight should be. I’ve replaced the soda I’ve been drinking with green tea and water. And I eat a lot healthier. I lost a 3 pounds from eating right and now I’m ready to work out.

How often should I work out to lose weight? I am able to workout 3 days a week (Tues, Thurs, and Fri) but I can rearrange my schedule to workout on other days (weekends aren’t an option). How many days a week should I workout and for how long?

I hate the treadmill but don’t mind the elliptical. I tend to rest my arms in between the two handles because it helps me exercise longer. Should I start using the handles even though they make me more tired? Also what stretches should I do after to flatten my stomach?

Also, what should I eat after I workout because I tend to get pretty hungry and don’t feel like cooking. Should I eat a snack and then eat dinner later on or should I eat my dinner right after?

First of all, you should always give your body one full day of no exercise. 3-5 days a week would be good.
You should do 1/2 hour of cardio and then do some exercises but make sure you rotate what you do each day. Ex: cardio and arm exercises one day, abs and legs the next…etc etc.
On the elliptical you should use the handles because that will give your arms an extra workout.
After you work out if you’re hungry, you should eat something healthy. Don’t binge!
Also, I heard this a couple years back and it seems to have proven true. You should only eat when you’re hungry, and when you do eat, fill yourself up. Repeat that to yourself when you’re tempted to eat because you’re bored, as so many of us do.

Yes you are correct target weight loss isnt possible. You cant choose what fat cells to draw from. Cardio is the only weigh to burn fat. If you want to loose fat in certain places you have to lose fat overall.

I would like to lose some weight because I don’t like it. The BMI thing tells me I’m at a healthy range but my weight bothers me. I am 5’6″, 120 pounds and am 14 years old. I am planning to fast for 3 days and maybe a bit longer after that. I just wanted to know how many pounds I can lose because it differs on the height and different weight.

Fasting can be useful, but your approach to it is horrible.

If you are going to fast, I’d say fast 16 to 20 hours, and consume your food in a smaller time window.

What people don’t realize is, fasting isn’t a diet. You still need to consume your daily calorie intake or you could be at a caloric deficite, maybe 200-300 calories less than what you’ve been eating. Which would put a diet into the effect of fasting.

But basically, if you want to fast properly, you need to costume your daily calories in a smaller window.

It is very unhealthy of for your body to fast for as long as you are wanting to. Everyone is different, but generally fasting for over 48 hours will make your body go catabolic. Your body will turn from stored fat to burning muscle fibers for energy if you plan on fasting for over 2 days. So I wouldn’t recommend it.

The reason your body does this is because, think about this (if you have a regular or large muscle mass, that current mass is going to costume a lot of calories and stored fat, so if the body turns catabolic, (burning muscle) the body can try to prolong it’s stored fat so you don’t die lol.

So take my advice, fast for 16 to 20 hours, or if you really want, you can go nuts and fast a little longer, but no more than 48 hours.

Eat all of your daily food needs after you break your fast, so you fast for 20 hours and eat for 4, then fast again.

Your body still gets all of the calories and gives your body a little more time to burn fat while fasting.

P.S. Don’t listen to these morons that preach about catabolic states. “Oh, yer gonna go catabolic if you don’t eat for 6 hours, or right after a workout, because it’s BS.

You only go catabolic after an average rate of 48 hours with no food.

As for pounds, well you”re not going to get far in 3 days, it has to be a prolonged effort. Basically your just going to be losing and gaining water weight, your body won’t be burning fat as fast as you think.

Seems like you try to tell them something healthy, like they need to lose weight, and they get all upset when I don’t think I should be more worried about it than they are.

When you say that a woman needs to lose weight, she hears a lot more then just constructive criticism. (99% of the time)

To a woman, someone suggesting that they need to lose weight isn’t exactly a warm friendly voice suggesting that they might feel better if they ate more fruits and vegetables. Instead, it’s someone telling them they are fat, that they are unattractive. That you don’t appreciate her body and don’t see why anyone else would.

Now, a mature woman (probably mid 20’s or older) would probably think that you, (or whoever is saying they need to lose weight) is a jerk and more or less brush it off, but unfortunately many, and I do mean many women out there are well, insecure about their appearance for one reason or another.

I don’t know how long you’ve been on Yahoo Answers, but I myself have already seen quite a few Questions from girls asking if they look okay, if they look fat, if they are pretty etc, etc. What I’m getting at, is that you shouldn’t even really have to go outside to know that…

“they get all upset when I don’t think I should be more worried about it then they are”. What does that even mean, that you didn’t have any real emotion attached to the comment? Well couldn’t you have thought of how that might come across?

Now look, I’m not trying to “rebuke” you, and frankly it’s not like I get out much, I don’t have that much experience with women, I’m just trying to answer your question.

This is somewhat off topic, but in my experience women hold a grudge far more easily and for much longer periods of time then males, I don’t understand why, I’m not trying to judge, and I really hate to stereotype but that’s the way it seems to be. (to me).

I mean just about everybody I’ve talked to on that particular subject has said that they’ve seen guys shake hands or even hug eachother within less then ten minutes of someone throwing a punch, but if you’ve ever witnessed a “cat-fight”, I seriously doubt it’s worked out that way. Just thought you might want to consider that.

I have pimples all over my fave. I am trying 3 differnet solutions, proactiv, clearisal, and Noxema. I also am 11 and weigh 150 lbs. Mom says that’s normal but I don’t believe her. Anyway what are some ways to lose wight and get rid of pimples I need to lose 70 lbs. in a month or as much of that as I can and try to get a perfectly clear face and it is totally covered in zits/pimples. OK. Slow down. And take a breath with me. First off stop using so many cleaners. The fact is that your skin could be getting acne because the pores are to sensitive so they get clogged up easily with oil. What kind of skin type do you have? Is it oily, just acne prone, normal, combination etc? I’ll need to know that before I can tell you where to go on next with that. And if you choose not to contact me then at least take this bit of advice . . Exfoliate (the removing of dead skin cells and excess oil and build up) at least once if not 2 times a week. It’ll do wonders.

Now on to the weight thing. . . It’s not impossible to lose that much weight in a month but the ways to get there are EXTREMLY unhealthy. Try exercising for 5 days a week before you eat anything. The exercise before you eat will cause your metabolism to get a kick start. Next try to cut sodas out of your diet (only like one a day). When it’s time to snack try instead of a little debbie cake (my fav are the swiss rolls, it’s a guilty pleasure) go for a fruit. Try an handful of grapes, an apple, or even tortilla chips and salsa (supposedly thats rather healthy)

Now Let me say that your mom is right. Your going through puberty and it’s normal to gain weight but you can still try to stay fit if you want to. I know exercise makes me feel really good about myself.

Oh and one thing that will help you with both of your issues is water water water. Now if your like me your going yuck right now. But water will help your skin and it helps you lose AND keep off weight. So remember to grab the recommended 64 oz. Or 8 glasses a day (or as close as possible to that). And you should check out your BMI (Body Mass Index) to see if your healthy which I’m sure you are.

Is there anything I can do to find help for my cat just diagnosed with kidney failure?

My 8-year-old cat has been losing weight since early spring. She was normal until that time. She did eat some of the contaminated food and I feel awful. She was just diagnosed with a severe case of kidney failure and the Vet says she is terminal. I am on a very limited income but want to do all I can for her. Is there anything or anyone that can help?

Yes, there is a lot you can do to stabilize your kitty and give her a good quality of life. Vets always say they are terminal, and that is becuase the damage is not healable. However, you can prevent further damage and many people have kept their cats living for years using some simple treatments. My kitty lived two years after diagnosis, when the vet said only two weeks.
First, go to yahoo groups and find the crf group. They are very knowledgable in care and inexpensive care. Second, make sure you have a vet on YOUR side, wanting to care for your pet. If your vet simply says, CRF is uncurable, look for one who is affordable who is willing to prescribe some simple things to help your kitty. I am by no means rich and easily afforded my kitty’s care with extras.
Make sure you know the cause — an 8 year old cat is not getting it from old age. Is it acute? Poison or infection related? That tells you what you need to treat to make her recover.
It is likely that you need to give your kitty some water, which helps many kitties live a LONG time by itself. The treatment is simply injecting water under the kitty’s skin. A lot of people think it sounds scary, but kitty’s needle each other all the time, and my kitty easily got used to it, especially since it made her feel better. As she recovered, she needed the fluids less and less. Go to www.bricomedicalsupplies.com for very very affordable supplies to do this — you can treat your kitty for as long as a year for just $100, when a vet will sell you just a week’s worth of treatment for like $20-40 so you can see the benefit.
Is your kitty getting treatment? It is also important to know her BUN and Creatinine to know how far along she really is. Please feel free to email me anytime, I have done a LOT of research and my kitty made a recovery to the point she needed virtualy no treatment and lived like a playful kitten for two years until something else came along (her real problem was recurrent infections). Please take care and cuddle your kitty for me. It is hard to tell, some kitties live weeks, some months some years. More information could help people who have dealt with this answer you more specifically. Vitamin B is another good thing.. Take care, my thoughts are with you.

PS, there are a variety of kidney foods your kitty can eat. My kitty did poorly on KD and was starving even though she ate it since it lacks the phosphorous but also lacks protein (whcih is not necessary). She did TONS better on Innova Lite, which has protein but low phosphorous which is what we want. So no, your kitty is not necessarily going to start dying if you feed her something besides kidney diet, my kitty improved when off kidney diet. Vets will tell you that though, since they encourage everyone to pts instead of treating. I did end up pts when the time was right, but before that my kitty did not even need pepcid because she was not even nauseous and her numbers stabilized from BUN 100 plus and Creatinine off the charts to Creat 2s-3s and barely above normal BUN even without the kidney diet.
Also, my cat WANTED to live longer, so pts is not always the answer until you know whether you can make your kitty better. My cat lived two more years of a full life, where she needed hardly any treatments, ate well, played, had no nausea, etc. — she was very happy. It was worth it to me to give her those extra years, but when she did start to suffer and wanted to be let go, I obeyed her wishes. All the best in this difficult time.

I just bought the alli pills, I am limiting my calorie intake for each day to about 1200, I haven’t started the alli pills yet, but have already lost 9lbs in the past two weeks just with dieting alone. I am establishing a pretty low cal eating plan before I start. My friend has been doing the same and has been taking alli for the past week and has lost 5 lbs, she hasnt had any bad side effects. I think that you only get sick after you eat if you eat a meal high in fat. yes, I’m know this question has been asked a million times, and there are about a million and one answers to go along with it. But I am asking this question honestly, asking opinions on what has worked for people. I’m talking about serious weight loss too, not just “oh I want to fit into a size 2 pair of jeans” type of deal. I need to lose a good amount of weight for health reasons and lifestyle choice. Yes I am an active person, and I have tried some programs before, usually had good results with Weight Watchers, but for some reason it’s just not working so well now despite watching the points and such. So I’m looking for a reliable, inexpensive weight loss plan. I am in college, with limited funds and options, and this may be the reason WW isn’t doing so good, not sure, but that’s not really the point either. What plans/techniques/ suggestions can you make or things you’ve tried that have worked for you?

Hello:

The recommended diet right now is 2k calories a day. It’s recommended that you eat 5 meals instead of 3 to spread the calories. If you eat rice, I highly recommend eating brown rice instead of white rice because it doesn’t contain as much sugar as white rice. Also, try drinking a lot of water since it helps control appetite. Avoid diet soda because diet soda is just as bad as regular soda. Eat a lot of protein after you’re done exercising because it helps relax muscles. Don’t eat too much bread either, because it can make you gain weight. Eat a balanced meal, meaning if you eat meat, eat veggies and fruit too. And I would recommend eating fruits and veggies during the summer, because it helps your body stay cool.

Exercise wise, I would recommend doing an every other day workout. For example, Monday-Wednesday and Friday try to run and do as much cardio. The other days try to work on upper body. Believe it or not, that’s how military personnel work out during their basic training. Sundays, you can go easy and do whatever you want. I would also suggest hiking and high altitude training, because it helps build stamina and endurance. Hiking two to three hours may be tiring, but it’s completely worth it. If you have gym membership, try using the elipticals and stair masters (sorry for the misspelling.) I usually go on lvl 15 on the stair masters and I burn calories like crazy.

Try to get as much sleep as possible too. Researcher found out that the more you sleep, the less hungry you get when you wake up.
