Please see “Physical Activity Calorie Calculators” source link below.

The following healthy living recommendations will help you if you’re trying to lose weight, tone up your muscles, have aspirations of building lean muscle mass, are attempting to get a wash board stomach, or just want to feel better:

*1) Burn more calories then you’re consuming everyday and measure your results using the following formula: Calories Consumed minus Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) minus Physical Activity minus the Thermic Effect of Food (TEF). A website that explains this formula in more detail and will help you determine how many calories you need to reach or maintain a certain weight is at http://www.primusweb.com/fitnesspartner/library/weight/calsburned.htm

Get an online, desktop, or cell phone diet and fitness calculator. This will allow you to easily calculate the above formula, set goals, log your daily calorie consumption, and register your physical activities.

Set realistic goals for your ideal body weight. Here are two websites that will calculate a suggested body weight:
Adults: http://www.halls.md/ideal-weight/body.htm
Teens/Children: http://www.kidshealth.org/kid/exercise/weight/bmi.html

It is difficult and unhealthy to lose more than one or two pounds per week. There are 3,500 calories in a pound. If you eat 500 fewer calories per day for a week you will lose one pound. If you burn through exercise 500 more calories per day for a week you will lose one pound.

Here are two articles on how to break through a weight loss plateau:
http://www.webmd.com/content/article/86/99147.htm
http://www.webmd.com/content/pages/18/102117.htm

*2) Eat natural and organic foods found on earth versus something created by a corporation to make money. Eat meals in small portions throughout the day and take a good multi-vitamin supplement.

Do not try fad diets or diet pills. Avoid “High Glycemic Load Carbs” (sugar, pastries, desserts, refined starches such as breads, pasta, refined grains like white rice; high starch vegetables such as potatoes) and drink lots of water. Read this article for more information on high GL Carbs:

*4) Get plenty of sleep. Sleep experts say most adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep each night for optimum performance, health, and safety.

*5) Educate yourself continually on health issues and make a life long commitment to good health. A great free publication is “Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2005”. A reputable test you can take to measure your biological age is at http://realage.com

Susan asks…

How many calories should I eat per day if I’m trying to lose weight?

Pretty straight forward question,
If I’m trying to lose weight,
roughly how many calories should I be eating per day for optimal weight loss?

weight loss cardiff answers:

It all depends on your gender, height, age, and weight. You can find multiple calorie needs calculators online but you must take these and experiment. Everyone’s body varies in the amount needed. Some people have faster metabolisms than others. Here are some sites that offer a calorie calculator. Once you guesstimate how many your body requires you must subtract an amount depending on how fast you want to lose weight. To lose 1 pound in a week you must subtract around 500 calories from your required caloric needs.

http://www.bodyforlife2.com/calorie_intake.htm
http://www.healthyweightforum.org/eng/calculators/calories-required/
They will all be a little different… You must experiment with the numbers… Also, these sites can list calorie needs higher than necessary.

“There are approximately 3500 calories in a pound of stored body fat. So, if you create a 3500-calorie deficit through diet, exercise or a combination of both, you will lose one pound of body weight. (On average 75% of this is fat, 25% lean tissue) If you create a 7000 calorie deficit you will lose two pounds and so on. The calorie deficit can be achieved either by calorie-restriction alone, or by a combination of fewer calories in (diet) and more calories out (exercise). This combination of diet and exercise is best for lasting weight loss. Indeed, sustained weight loss is difficult or impossible without increased regular exercise.

If you want to lose fat, a useful guideline for lowering your calorie intake is to reduce your calories by at least 500, but not more than 1000 below your maintenance level. For people with only a small amount of weight to lose, 1000 calories will be too much of a deficit. As a guide to minimum calorie intake, the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) recommends that calorie levels never drop below 1200 calories per day for women or 1800 calories per day for men. Even these calorie levels are quite low.”

Good luck!

Donald asks…

How much weight can I realistically expect to lose in 8 weeks?

I just stepped on the scale this morning and was shocked at the number! (which was 175) I was thinking that I weighed in the 165 range. = ( Anyway, I am going on vacation in mid March and would like to lose a bit of weight. I’m 5’5… what is a realisitc goal for me in 8 weeks? Any suggestions on how to kick start the weight loss? Thanks guys!

weight loss cardiff answers:

Find daily calorie intake calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 400-600cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
Eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours – it optimizes your metabolism)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day (have lots of veggies to eat in between meals if you are still hungry)
8 glasses of water -carry bottle of water with you and when you feel hungry drink it – we often confuse hunger with thirst (our bodies confuse it)
have complex carbs for breakfast – they give you energy
have protein (lean meat, legumes etc) for dinner – repairs muscle
cardio is the only fat burning exercise and burns fat all over your body (running, jogging, swimming, spinning, elliptical etc) 4-6 times a week for average of 45min, light weight training a few times a week (more muscle=faster metabolism)
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, pasta etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, ice cream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
Of course you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)
use fitday.com for tracking your intake

Your Question About Easy Weight Loss

Nancy asks…

Did I ruin my whole weight loss diet with this food..? I feel like crying please help and be honest?

Okay. So I’m 15, 5’3 and I started dieting when I am 120 lbs. I’ve been on a very good, healthy diet for about a week now, I probably have lost about 2 pounds. So I’m probably around 118 now?

Anyways. So I’ve been doing SO good. Today I went to my friends birthday party, not to mention it is the first day of my period (MASS CRAVINGS). She had SO MUCH GOOD FOOD! lol. She had stuff like chips and dip, burgers, fries, fruit salad, cake, cookies, brownies, etc.. ! Urgh!
As you know, I am on the first day of my period and my cramps were kinda bad. This also drove me to have really terrible cravings, to the point where I was obsessed with satisfying my cravings! I wanted it then and there. So, I gave in at the birthday party. I had about everything there. I’m planning to bounce back to my regular diet tommorrow, maybe start off kinda easy to get back into the groove. I was literally grazing on everything there. xD Will this make me gain a pound, even if I go back to my usual diet?
By the way, I am going to seriously be good about everything once I bounce back into the groove again. I just want to lose 10 lbs to get to 110 lbs. =/

Will this throw me off track?
Come on, you know how it is.. xD Your period can drive you nuts with cravings, especially with your favorite foods laid out in front of you! At parties, everyone eats and has a good time.. Which is what I did. ;_;

I CANT STOP EATING TODAY. IS THIS FROM MY PERIOD? UGHH!

weight loss cardiff answers:

Don’t stress about it. It was one day of binging.

And what is your weight loss goal? The healthy weight for you at your age and height is 115. Losing two pounds a week until you plateau is about right, but be wary of the scale, a normal person’s weight changes throughout the day depending on food and water weight, so expect to see fluctuation.

Way to be healthy, but you are already thin, so don’t get obsessed with it. You are allowed to have junk food, just do it spareingly. (Like only at parties!)

Donna asks…

WEIGHT LOSS, easy fasy and effective.?

I’m about 5’3ft and 135lbs and I’m 15. Am I over weight, and will a water diet help lose weight and clean out my system?

weight loss cardiff answers:

Cool!

David asks…

How to easily add variety in my diet?

I have trouble having a variety of food / meals in my diet. I seem to eat the same thing all the time and I feel it is unhealthy.

What is an easy way to introduce variety into a diet? I don’t mean a weight loss diet, I just mean a normal balanced diet.

weight loss cardiff answers:

I try to cook with fresh local ingredients if I can find them. When I go to the market (Currently Costa Rica), I buy lots of all sorts of things with no real plan on what I will be preparing.

Later on, I look at everything that I have, and wait for inspiration to strike.

This is by no means an economical way to shop, it can get pretty spendy depending on where you live. But buying single ingredients and then playing in the kitchen keeps my diet diverse, and cooking interesting.

For lunch yesterday I made roasted red peppers and onion with seared pork and pineapple. It was a departure on the Hawaiian thing. It was a nice snack.

I have no idea what I will eat today, I’m stocked to the rafters with everything I could find at the market. The other day I made a simple marinara with fresh basil, tomatoes, and extra virgin olive oil, and then had mango crepes for desert. Those were just the ingredients that I felt like eating at the time.

Many times I do not see any protein that looks interesting, so I go nearly vegetarian for a week.

Anyhow, my advice is to buy the best ingredients that your pocketbook will allow you to get, and then figure out what to do with it later.

Has anyone lost weight on jenny Craig without exercising?

I’m about 40 pounds over weight, I just started Jenny Craig today and was wondering will I be able to lose the weight on the Jenny plan without exercising? I am unable to exercise right now due to illness That has my body in pain almost 24-7, until I overcome this exercising is not an option. Anyhow from personal experiences from Jenny Craig users, has anyone lost weight without exercising and how much a week?

weight loss cardiff answers:

This is exactly what Jenny Craig is for.
It is for those who don’t want to work out or can’t due to medical reasons.
The food has been scrutinized for it’s ingredients so I suggest to you that you do your own research before going on this.
I was 220 a year ago and I am now 140.
The healthier way to lose weight is to exercise and eat right which is what I did. Portion control is very important too. Eating does not mean stuffing yourself until you cannot walk.
