Linda asks…

Any tips on getting and staying motivated to reach my weight loss goals?

Last summer I started a weight loss program and was really excited about the prospect of being fit and healthy while I’m still young. Within the first 2 months, I lost almost 20lbs and wasn’t craving chocolate and sweets and other things like that, which I normally crave all the time. Then I went to Chicago for the weekend, and it’s been all downhill from there. I completely lost all my motivation and I think my cravings are even worse now than they were before I started the program last year! I just turned 25 and want to get healthy and fit so that I can better enjoy my life. I’m open to any advice or words of wisdom that might help me get back on track. Thanks in advance!
Ok, I’m not looking for people to tell me what to do to lose weight, because I already know that part. I’m asking about how to MOTIVATE myself to keep it up.

weight loss cardiff answers:

Congrats on working towards a fitter and healthier lifestyle. I don’t have any fancy plans but when I lost some weight and started an exercise program a few years ago I found that sticking to a strict program all the time was very hard. I kept a record of what exercise I did on a calendar (for me it was treadmill so I recorded time and kilometres) It was amazing to watch my improvement and it kept me motivated. With food I aimed for 5 days a week that I ate well – lots of veges etc and no treats. But I let myself have 2 days where I might eat out or splurge. I recorded this and the days might change depending on if I went out mid week or weekend. I found this worked as I could have treats but could also tell from my records how often I was having them. Good luck hope this helps.

Carol asks…

Is it better to do the workout programs on treadmills or just run?

You know how treadmills have “weight loss programs” or “aerobic programs“? Will you lose more weight faster by doing one of those or just simply running on a treadmill?

weight loss cardiff answers:

OK, ignore the spammer above me. Those gimmicks never work and prey on peoples desire to lose weight easily, if they do work, it will be short term and the weight will come back as soon as you stop.

Either will work, the programs might push you a little harder than you’ll push yourself though. Just make sure to spend no less than 30 minutes on the treadmill, at a speed that will keep your heart rate up steadily. Spend no more than 1 hour on a treadmill either. This includes a 5 minute warm up and a 5 minute cool down. You need to make sure to do this when you run too. For weight loss you also need to watch your diet as well. That means eating enough just as it means not eating too much. If you don’t get enough calories your body will burn muscle instead of fat.

EDIT: Shaun is ok, the first answerer is the spammer, in case no one noticed.

Your Question About Easy Weight Loss

Mark asks…

How can I lose weight easily?

Im 13, 5’5″, and weigh 125 pounds. It’s almost summer and i wanna be able to wear a bikini and not be embarresed. My stomachs pretty thin but my legs are really big. My arms are alittle chubby and i just wanna lose pure body fat all around my body easily and quickly. Any ideas? Thank you sooo much in advance(:

weight loss cardiff answers:

You have to get out of that chair and away from the front of that computer to get the exercise. See if you can find someone to work out with you so you are not so on your own with it. Stay way from Carbohydrates like bread and breaded foods French fries and heavy starchy foods. Your blood pressure will come down some when your weight comes down but you should probable be on some meds to control your blood pressure while you lose the weight.

Walking is damn good exercise and its free. Vegetables are your friend but once again not the starchy ones and not macaroni and cheese which I for one think is one of the best inventions in the culinary world. Drink a lot of water while you diet. It will help keep you hydrated and a little fuller. Carrot sticks and celery sticks and some fat free ranch dressing are tasty treats and make a good healthy snack for in between meals and an apple a day goes a long way. Don’t forget to eat breakfast. Cantaloupe and low fat yogurt are great and strawberries and yogurt are wonderful too. A hand full of blueberries and a small bowl of raisin bran with skim milk or yogurt and raisins or strawberries is another good choice but cereal has carbs and if you want to lose weight you can’t pig out on the cereal.

Remember, you have to decide to lose the weight and no one can do it for you. They can do it with you but not for you.

Robert asks…

16 years old.. Need to lose weight?

I’m a 16 year old girl. I weigh 148 pounds and I’m only 5’1. I would like to lose weight and tone up a bit. (I would love to have a six pack <3) My only problem is, I don't know how to really get into the whole fitness thing. I've heard many different things about what makes people over weight and some of it isn’t even true.. Apparently. I have school coming up in less than a month. Should I work out everyday? Should I only work, lets say 3-5 times a week? I need some sort of guide lines to really get into the whole fitness thing. I understand that your diet has a huge part in it. I know what to do for the diet part. The workout part I’m clueless. I’m bigger in my stomach area, legs, and a little bit on my arms. (I got the little flabby arms, a big stomach, some big thighs, love handles. And when I look down.. I got that double chin which I hate.) What are some good workouts that I can do? I don’t want anything too intense because I do have a few problems with my knee and ankle. I unfortunately can’t do anything about that. Another thing is, how can I get motivated to do this and Stay motivated? And the biggest thing for me is, when I lose the wait.. How Do I Keep It Off???

Any workouts on YouTube or somewhere online would be greatly appreciated.

One more thing: I’m not one of those people that want to lose maximum amount of weight in minimum time. If it takes a couple months then I’m okay with that. I need something to fit around my schedule with school starting soon. I also do horseback riding (+barn chores) at least 3 times a week. (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday).

Please please help me out. I’m going into my junior year. I’ve spent my entire time in school being uncomfortable with low self esteem. (With being overweight and I have bad acne scarring.) If I can spend my last two years in high school and actually get to enjoy it, I will be so so grateful.

Advice, tips, reminders, etc. will help.
Thank you so much

weight loss cardiff answers:

Losing weight does not come easily for anyone. Whether you are fifty pounds overweight or twenty, losing the weight is not an easy thing to do.

While most people choose to go on a diet because they think that they need to look better, the real motivation for losing weight should be about being healthier overall.

The problem with many diets is that they take too much time and are too complicated. There is a large amount of planning involved when it comes to meals. In addition, even when following the diet strictly the weight does not come off very quickly at all.

In fact, most of the time a person will only lose one or two pounds a week when they first start a new diet. This can be disheartening and lead to the oh-so familiar yo-yo effect.

When someone steps on the scale and sees a two pound weight loss when they think it should be more, they are likely to spiral out of control and quit the diet and begin their poor eating habits again.

Healthy Weight Loss

What many people do not realize is that losing one to two pounds a week is the healthiest way to lose weight. Losing this much (or little depending on the way you look at it) sets reasonable expectations and leads to achievable goals.

If you are carrying quite a bit of extra weight, these numbers can be increased slightly but in all likelihood, striving to lose more than two to three pounds per week is a surefire way to:

Burn muscle rather than fat
Become discouraged and give up

Let’s get scientific for a second. One pound of body fat equals 3,500 calories. If you didn’t know this I bet this is quite a shocker – you can actually measure how much you should be eating based on your own weight loss goals.

Very broadly said, having a 500 calorie deficit per day will let you burn about one pound per week (500 x 7 = 3500). Neat huh?

To lose weight faster it is important to increase the amount that you exercise.

Diets for Fast Weight Loss

When trying to lose weight quickly it is important to make sure that you are eating healthy. Starches and added sugars should be eliminated from the diet. In addition, avoiding fat from dairy and meat will help increase weight loss as well.

Some of the foods that should be considered when trying to lose weight include:

Fruits
Veggies
Soy products
Egg whites
Fish
Shellfish
Lean meat
Skinless chicken breast
Non-fat dairy food

It is important to eat a lot of vegetables as they will help you feel full. Drinking water will also help you feel full. All tempting foods should be removed from the home when you are starting a healthy weight loss plan.

Michael asks…

How can I lose weight easily?

I’m 15 and since I was 12 I was a comfort eater, I was bullied and made to feel like shit. Now being at a stage where I’ve gained all this weight, I feel so unconfident. I have belly fat and big thighs. I hate the belly fat because it means I don’t feel comfortable going out unless I’m I’m baggy clothes and jumpers and I won’t go out in shorts or skirts, even during the summer when it’s very hot. I’ve been trying to lose the pounds as I want to lose around 2 stone for my trip to Spain in July so I can feel confident an comfortable in a bikini! I have 12 weeks and want to try a diet as well as exercise. What’s exercises will help me? I don’t like running because I get bored of it, an what diets could I do? I’m not good with veg but I love fruit and after watching what I’m eating usually I need to lose the carb foods! I’m not asking to have a completely flat belly but I want to lose the bulges so I can go in a bikini and be happy! Please help me!!!

weight loss cardiff answers:

It’s not going to be easy especially if you’re already a comfort eater, it will probably be one of the most difficult things you’ll ever do.

First off fix your habit of comfort eating, it’s a bad one and it will only slow you down or completely ruin your weight-loss goals.

As for exercise anything will do. Play some sports, do some running, the best thing to do would be a weight-lifting routine, but since you’re a girl and only 15 you probably would not like the idea of that.

Anyways anything is better than doing nothing, so rather than sit on your butt and think about it all day just get out there and do something. It’s infinitely better that way.

As for your diet try and stay away from processed foods such as hydrogenated vegetable oils, junk food, canned food, table sugar, condiments, etc. Etc.
Eat wholesome nourishing nutrient-dense foods.
Try and balance your diet so you’re getting a good mix of vegetables, fats/protein and some fruits and grains.

Besides that to control your weight loss just eat slightly less.

The best weight-loss is achieved through slow dieting. If you try to lose weight so fast not only will it harm your metabolism and cause you to lose precious lean tissue mass it will also put you at susceptibility to rebounding and regaining much or all of the weight you worked so hard to lose in the first place.

So in other words, slow and steady wins the race. Instead of trying to lose 2 stone (~28 lbs) you should be going for roughly half of that (1 stone or 10-14 lbs) in 2 months. Losing 28 so quickly will do you more harm than good you have to look at things in the long term. Or is this “weight loss” thing just a passing though for you? If you’re truly dedicated you’ll be willing to put in the time and effort and you wouldn’t be looking so hard for a easy-way out.

Being healthy and lean is a lifestyle choice, not a one-time fix. This is a very important distinction to make. Only change your diet to something manageable that you would be willing to spend your entire life on. That way there is no risk of rebounding or doing excessive harm to your body. Slow and steady. Good luck.

Your Question About Easy Weight Loss

Chris asks…

Weight loss pills that work?

I go to the gym 4 timesa week anddo huge amountof cardio excercise –
I eat really healthy and also swim twice a week – But I’m still 5stone over weight Immiserable and depressed and need a solution but I cnat afford a gastric band – You know of any pills that work???

weight loss cardiff answers:

Many weight loss pills only work by curbing appetite. But the fact that you’re so active means you need to eat a lot of protien and even carbs to ensure you can keep up. Others also work by reducing the amount of water in your system… Again not a good idea if you are working out… You need to have as much water to feed your muscles as possible.

Generally, women need to increase their strength training(lifting weights, squats, etc.) and protien intake (shakes immediately after working out) to increase muscle mass and speed up metablolism to burn fat better. For some, (and it sounds like you too), cardio does almost nothing to burn fat. I guarantee if you focus more on strength training, with only light cardio (20 minutes of walking), your metabolism will shift in about 2-3 weeks and you should start loosing weight.

If you still want to try a weight loss pill, i’ve seen some results with “slim quick”, but it’s expensive and you have to remember to take it on a regular schedule – which many women also don’t have the luxury of. Also watch because some types of pills are addictive and literally the minute you stop taking them you gain it all back.

I’ve also heard of some health benefits packages covering the costs of gastric bands or other surgical procedures when it’s necessary to prevent serious illness or injury… Check that out with insurance companies in your area.

William asks…

Anyone know anything about weight loss pills?

Im looking for some weight loss pills that actually work. Does anyone know of any work?

weight loss cardiff answers:

You will be searching for a long time my friend because the fact is, there are no weight loss pills that work. Please trust me when I say you don’t need a weight loss pill to lose weight. Nobody does.

Every weight loss pill company says to diet and exercise while taking their product. Why, because that is how you lose weight, through diet and exercise.

That is how they get you. They make you believe that it is their product that caused the weight loss when in fact it was actually your hard work. What happens when you don’t diet and exercise while taking their product and see no weight loss results.

They say to you, “Well, we do reccomend diet and exercise as well”. It’s a win win situation for them.

Each pill has there own set of side effects and hidden dangers and all have the potential to cause harm. Why would you take the risk when you can lose weight by simply eating well and exercising.

There is no magic secret to weight loss. It is all about hard work, commitment, goal setting and desire. If you want to lose weight you can and you will.

This following website gives you the tools you need to develop a healthy lifestyle and maintain it for a lifetime.

Good luck and all the best with your weight loss goals

Michael asks…

wat are some good weight loss pills?

what are some good weight loss pills that actually work and dont make you to jittery and what are some other good ways to loose weight? thanks

weight loss cardiff answers:

Don’t take diet pills. They are unnatural and dangerous. It is not the lack of pills that got you heavy; that is not the fix you need. It was (most likely) improper diet and lifestyle that got you the extra weight. That is the fix you need.

The best way to lose weight is through the principles of balance and moderation. You need to eat good food and eat enough of it.

Shoot to lose 1-3 pounds per week. No more. Don’t go hungry, just keep yourself filled with good, natural foods.

Don’t worry about calories. Caloric science is flawed for several reasons. 1) it assumes 100% absorption, but we all absorb and excrete different amounts; 2) It assumes all calories are processed the same, but calories from natural sources are burned more slowly and evenly than from refined sources; 3) It assumes that the amount of energy released by combustion (burning) in a lab is the same amount of energy released when the food is broken down enzymatically in the gut; 4) It assumes that the same exercise done by different people will burn the same amount of exercise, but different exercises will be harder or easier for different people; 5) Correlation does not prove causation. People who are heavier eat more calories: did the calories make them heavy, or did being heavy make them need more calories? Maybe they are both symptoms of a deeper problem. 6) people in China consume 25-40% more calories; even the sedentary office workers have more calories and less obesity than we.

Asian cultures have long ago figured out how we should be eating, Ever since we have looked to science to tell us how to eat we have seen more obesity and diet-related disease. If we eat like the Asians, we will look like the Asians. This doesn’t mean you have to eat Asian food, just adhere to the principles that are common to the different cultures and cuisines.

You should eat mostly vegetables, mostly cooked (cold and raw foods slow your metabolism because they need to be cooked in your stomach) and a wide variety, mostly fresh and in-season and local, simple grains (more rice, less bread), some fruit, a little meat, no dairy (it’s for infants and grows tissue), and no artificial foods.

Avoid artificial foods, including sugar substitutes. Don’t worry about calories, fat, protein, carbs, nor any one component of food.

There are several books that explain this strategy of eating. “The Asian Diet: simple secrets for eating right, losing weight, and being well” by Bussell explains the diet and its rationale. “The Asian Diet: get slim and stay slim the Asian way” by Tran has recipes that adhere to the principles. “The China Study” by Campbell has the science behind the recommendation.

Get some exercise every day, but not too much and not always the same exercise. Start slow and work your way up. Calisthenics are great, as is Tai Chi. Walking and swimming are also great. All other exercises should be in a wide rotation.

Follow the principles of balance and moderation and you’ll be fine. Most diets in America are not balanced nor moderate.

Your Question About Easy Weight Loss

Helen asks…

What are the most effective ways to lose weight? How much weight can i lose in 2 months?

I’m 5’3 and 150 pounds. I’m really not happy with myself and i want to change my unhealthy lifestyle. What are some effective diets that help you lose weight quicker? Also, what are some really good fat burning workouts? i have insanity, but I’m not sure if it would be the best choice. If using these diets/workouts, how much weight could i lose in about 2 months?

weight loss cardiff answers:

This will help you:

Losing weight in two months is a realistic weight loss goal. The most effective way to accomplish this goal is through reducing daily calorie intake and increasing physical activity. Combined, these two lifestyle changes create a calorie deficit. This allows your body to tap into fat reserves, causing weight loss.

Calculate Weight Loss Goal

If you want to lose weight in two months, it helps to have weight loss goals. The fastest weight loss recommended is 1 to 2 lbs. Weekly, according to MedlinePlus. This is 8 to 16 lbs. In two months. Achieving this weight loss requires burning 500 to 1,000 calories daily, through a combination of exercise and diet. For example, for a 16-lb. Weight loss in two months, you can eat 700 fewer calories daily and workout to burn 300 calories.

Select a Cardio Activity

Select a cardio activity that matches your weight loss goals. For example, if you need to burn at least 300 calories during your workout session, hiking, low impact aerobics and playing baseball burn 300 or more calories an hour for a 160-lb. Person, according to MayoClinic.com. As you get stronger, increase the amount of calories burned through more intense activities. For example, rollerblading burns 913 calories an hour and running sheds 986 calories an hour. Talk with your doctor about the best level of activity for your situation.
Eat Specific Foods

Select foods that help you meet your weight loss goals, including fruits, whole grains and vegetables. These foods are high in fiber and low in calories, allowing you to feel more satisfied without the extra calories. Some foods, such as omega-3 fatty acids, also improve your metabolism. Salmon, walnuts and tuna all contain these special fatty acids. Almonds are another good food for weight loss. Not only does your body not absorb all of the calories from almonds, this food helps prevent food cravings.
Portion Control

You might be consuming excess calories without knowing it by selecting large portions. Portion control will help you control your calorie intake, promoting weight loss in two months. Eat the size of your palm when eating a serving of meat. The size of your cupped hand is equal to a cup. An ounce of nuts is about the size of 1 ½ golf balls. An ounce of cheese is about the size of a pair of dice. The size of a ping pong ball is about 2 tbsp. Of butter.

Carol asks…

How do I lose weight in the winter?

I’m a 16 year old male who is 170 pounds and 5’4 and I want to lose weight really quick,It will be really hard for me to lose being that winter has arrived in the NYC but is there still a way to lose weight quick?I’m willing to buy exercise machines as long as there around 50$ and actually work.

weight loss cardiff answers:

Go wheat free. No pasta, pizza, bread and so on. And no food
after 7 p.m. People achieve marvellous results with it. Depending on
your initial weight, you can drop upwards from 20 pounds a month. If
you don’t eat wheat then you don’t eat all those sticky, fatty goey
cakes, you don’t eat junk food, and you don’t eat biscuits. But your
diet is still balanced. It costs nothing, and you do not have to
calculate points or to buy special meals or plans.
Good luck,my friend

Michael asks…

What’s the quickest way to lose weight?

I really want to lose about 5 to 10 lb and I don’t want it to take forever! Are there any workouts or activities that will help me lose weight quicker? Also what are some foods that I should be eating throughout the week? Breakfast foods? Lunch foods? &dinner? Answers and opinions would be nice, please help!

weight loss cardiff answers:

Cut down on your sodium. Many prepared foods have as much as 30% of your daily value. You get your daily requirement of sodium from a healthy diet; too much can cause you to retain water weight.
