You cannot lose much weight in one week – maybe a couple of pounds. Weight loss is an overall process and there are no magic answers. Pay no attention to weight loss supplements and pills and all the latest fads. You need to think about many factors but most of them are related to issues we’ve known about for a very long time. There are many sensible things you can do that will make a tremendous difference over the long term if you need to lose weight. It can be done in a healthy way. This is what has worked for me.

Keeping a food journal really does help. It will give you a much better sense of how much you are eating, and when, and why.

Make a few additional small changes – walk everywhere, always use stairs instead of elevators, walk on escalators, get up and move around at least once an hour if your work or your life in general is sedentary, walk every day, use a pedometer. Walking 10,000 steps a day is a really good idea. Build up to a long brisk walk everyday, or most days. Be more active and watch less TV and spend less time on the computer. Buy one piece of exercise equipment to have at home and be strict with yourself about using it. Sometimes you can find mini-steppers or exercise bikes at second hand stores and thrift stores for just a few dollars.

Start a weight lifting routine. Join a gym. Possibly you can find one that has someone who specializes in weight lifting programs for beginners. Weight lifting will increase your metabolism as well as improve posture and appearance overall. Even if you can’t get to the gym you can work out at home using things around the house. Invest in a good weight training book. The Dummies series actually has a good one.

In terms of diet, cut out or reduce things like junk food, pop, fat, fast food. Eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meat, fish. Particularly if you choose a vegetarian lifestyle include natural peanut butter, hummus, dried fruit and nuts. Pay close attention to getting the nutrients your body needs to be healthy.

Make your portion sizes smaller. Use a smaller plate – in our society we have become accustomed to thinking that we need a large plate of food at every meal, and we don’t. About quarter of your plate of food should be protein and at least half of it should be veggies.

Learn to count calories. At your current weight and activity level, you may possibly need about 2000 calories or more to maintain your current weight. So you will lose weight at a reasonable and healthy rate if you cut back to about 1600 or 1700 calories a day.

Eat small amounts frequently, rather than three large meals. Never skip breakfast. Include some protein in your breakfast. It will help get you through the day.

Drink plenty of water, at least 8 big glasses of water a day, and more if it is very hot, if you sweat a lot, or if you are exercising intensely, and eliminate fruit juices. Fruit juices have too many calories, so get your vitamins from fresh fruit, not the juice. You will begin to see changes in your body.

An area that many people overlook is getting enough sleep. You are much more likely to overeat or to binge eat if you are tired and not well rested, so get enough sleep.

Why do anorexics lose weight when they start eating normally?

I have read and heard about how, when die-hard anorexics go into treatment and are forced to eat a normal diet, they actually lose weight over the first week or so. I’ve even seen it mentioned on a documentary about eating disorders. However, this seems highly irrational since anorexics’ bodies are in starvation mode/have very low metabolism, and therefore eating normally should cause them to gain weight. Is there a medical explanation for this?

Its because if someone doesn’t eat normally (like never eating at noon but still have breakfast and dinner), the body will detect that there is a lack of food available, and as a natural way to prevent death due to lack of food it will store fats to be sure to have enough energy to survive.

When they start eating normally again the body notices there’s no more lack of nutrients and will use the nutrients stored (which are the fats), and since the body now starts to use the fats stored you will lose those fats and lose weight.

NEVER eat under your healthy recommandations even when you try to loose weight! It will only make it worse!

And I don’t gain weight easily…I eat quite a bit of unhealthy foods, and have for a while, and I’ve been waving around 145lb’s for over a year. I never exercise and do practically nothing every day.(I know, sad) Does this mean if I actually do something, it should be easy to lose that weight?

What I am trying to do is get rid of this potbelly. It’s horrible. Will running reduce the size of it?

I Walk Fast 30mins 3 times a week. It will really work…. I also jump rope 10mins a day everyday.

In the morning I eat Protein Bars….. Apple snack….. Lunch Chicken salad…… I drink nothing but water……. Powerade and Gaterade will only put the weight on you…because its nothing but sugar..and sugar turns into fat….. Try Sugar Free foods and watch your carb intake…… Plus you don’t want to eat anymore than 1400 cals a day…. Start counting if you want to lose the weight. And your skin after you lose the weight … You’ll need to tone up… Thats the stage I’m in now….So I’m still working on that

You will lose more body fat eating protein and fat (don’t eat protein alone) than not eating AT ALL. To lose weight fast eat all you want but nothing but meat, eggs, healthy oils, mayo, butter and half an avocado a day (you’ll need added potassium). Keep the calories high and the fat percentage high, at least 65% of calories. Adding in green vegetables & some cheese will continue weight loss but at a slower pace.

If you starve yourself by lowering calories lower than are needed for the body to function, your body will freak out and will want to store every ounce in case it doesn’t get nourished again. You need to give it adequate nourishment so it doesn’t slow your metabolism down to adjust for lower calories.

Simple carbohydrates (sugar, flour, bread, cereal, pasta, potatoes, rice) triggers insulin which can store the calories you eat into fat. The more protein you eat the more the fat burning hormone glucagon is released. The more carbohydrate you eat the more the fat storage hormone insulin is released.

Carbs are addictive and can be disastrous to our health. The best way to break the addiction is NO carbs for 3 days. Make a huge batch of deviled eggs and eat one every time you want “something” have huge omelets for breakfast, with bacon, a lil onion, peppers, mushrooms & cheese. Pork chops for lunch. Get pork rinds and eat them with tuna salad. Steak for dinner. Make a huge sugar free cheese cake for dessert. Eat so much you won’t feel deprived of anything. By the fourth day, your addiction will be gone and you can start making healthy choices.

High insulin levels unbalance other hormones. Controlling your insulin level will balance out other hormones & allow human growth hormone (HGH) to be produced naturally so you will gain lean muscle even without exercise. Any exercise will greatly increase your muscle mass with high HGH levels.

Dr.Atkins was a cardiologist, low carb was a health plan easier sold as a “diet” Read any of his books for easily understandable science. Lutz “Life without Bread” & Taubes “Good calorie, bad calorie” are excellent books that dispel all the nutrition myths.

How do I get serious about losing weight?

I have wanted to lose weight for a long time, and right now, I need to for my health because all of the old people in my family have diabetes and I am only 18 but I want to do it now so it wont be passed onto me. And I have tried all kinds of diets. I tried the gum diet. Where you chew gum when you get a craving. I have tried the water diet, and the carb diet. I seem to lose like 40 pounds and then gain it all back. It sucks. I know why. Its because I work and go to school all the time, plus my diet is HORRIBLE, and I am lazy when it comes to going to the gym by myself. I get bored really easily. Its not that I want to wear Britney Spears skank clothes. I want to be healthy. And I want to be healthy before I have a baby. And I want a more exciting sex life. LOL its great but I want to be able to do alot more. But if any of you can help… Please do

Well, you have many reasons why you want to lose the weight. I think the best reason is simply, for your health. Keep in mind that only YOU can do this–you’re in control here.

Instead of a diet, try making a lifestyle change. You know, no more junk foods, fast foods, sodas, sweets and candies. Throw the junk out and don’t buy anymore! Star eating 4-6 small healthy meals each day. Don’t forget about the fruits and veggies!
Drink water! It really does help with weight loss. If you have a soda craving, have a diet caffeine free soda. If it’s not caffeine free, you need to increase your water even more!
Of course, exercise! I hate going to the gym alone too. So instead, I go walking or ride my bike or play a sport—anything! Do what you like to do!

You have many great reasons why you should lose the weight. Don’t forget about those reasons! Keep a positive, I can attitude, set a goal (like I want to lose 7 pounds in 4 weeks) and go for it!! You CAN do this! And, believe me, it gets easier as the days go by!

Remember that a healthy weight loss is 1-2 pounds per week! Also, sometimes it helps to keep a food journal–write down what you eat, when you eat and how many calories you’re taking in. Sometimes we go into shock when we add those calories up at the end of the day, but it helps to see what we need to cut out.

It is told that lemon water helps with weight loss, but how effective is it? Not the detox diet, but just drinking lemon water throughout the day, how much weight could you possibly lose in a week? In a month? I am curious to know how effective it really is in losing weight.

YOU SHOULD NOT BE EVEN TRYING TO GET PREGNANT FIVE MONTHS AFTER GASTRIC BYPASS SURGERY!!!!!!!

It’s not recommended to even TRY until 12-18 months when your weight has stabilized. Your surgeon would FLIP OUT if you told him that you are already trying!

Between your rapid weight loss, limited capacity, and still healing from MAJOR surgery, your body IS NOT READY for pregnancy.

I’m not trying to be rude, but didn’t they go over this in detail before surgery?!? I had to sign a form specifically detailing that this was discussed.

I know they are conveinant, but they are so full of sodium, it will cause to gain water weight.
They are so full of preservitives, your insides will begin to look like play-doh!

I am a busy mom, but i take time out every 2 weeks to prepare food, and freeze them in preportioned containers to take to work for my “homemade lean cuisine”.

Weight Loss Plans for A 13 Year Old?

Okay, I’m 5’4 & weigh 165, i know that’s really overweight but i want to do something about it.. My mam cooks for me but every time i want something healthy, She gives me horrible fatty processed food… i really like cooking but evertime i try, she just takes over.. I used to play soccer, but now i just get out of breath too much when i play, i love to dance, and i play the wii fit, i also like running but i’m not good at it, and i’m afraid people will laugh if they see me running in the only track we have in my town. My plate is also too big, and i know it is, but my mam just gives me a big one.. its really annoying because she just doesnt understand… she also buys LOADS of snacks, and because we have a big family, She cooks easy foods.. Everytime i tell her not to buy all that crap, she says ‘well its cheap, and it gets eaten’ i keep trying to tell her to buy fruit, but she thinks its too expensive, and that you could buy better things with that money…. HELP ME MAKE A PLAN ON WHAT TO EAT PLEAASSEE?!

Grilled is soo much better for you and to me tastes better!
Try fixing your own plate instead of your mom pileing alot on there
Run up and down your rd or jog i tell myself to pace myself at my own speed
Excercise daily that also helps with not only keeping in shape but healthy
Alot of ppl eat when their bored and that is a problem when you get bored an think about eating get up and go do wii fit!!

I took the baby out in the stroller and went up and down the hilly parts of our neighbourhood.

Also, when the baby was sleeping I used dumbbells while sitting on the couch.
